NI Makers in the News in June

There have been so many great stories circulating about NI designer-makers making waves during last month. Here are just a few highlights of the exciting things that have been happening.

Two specially commissioned cushions by textile artist Deborah Toner were presented to the Queen during the Royal Visit during June, which included a trip to visit St George's Market in Belfast.

St George's has also been nominated in the heritage category of the UK wide National Lottery Awards and were featured on the BBC's One Show on the 2nd of July as part of an episode that focusing on the awards nominations.

The Derry City Council Craft Development Programme was launched during June and as part of the celebrations it was announced that local ceramicist Deirdre Callaghan 'DocPot'  had won the prestigious competition for local makers to design distinctly Derry trophies for the Clipper Race. Handmade by Deirdre in her DocPot studio on Pump Street, they were inspired by the spectacle, colour and the celebration of the 2012 Clipper festival.  Each trophy is unique, each has its own distinct colour to represent the joy of the LegenDerry Maritime Festival, and placed together in a group, they evoke the spirit of the clippers as they make their journey up the Foyle.  The trophies includes the image of the Peace Bridge as an iconic symbol of our City’s bright future.

NI contemporary jeweller Samantha Moore was among the 86 designer-makers selected to take part in Hallmark Salon taking place at Somerset House, London, which took place at the end of June. She received support from the Craft NI Export Development Fund to attend

June brought the long-awaited Game of Thrones exhibition to Northern Ireland. NI makers, particularly the family jewellers the Steensons were in the spotlight for their part in creating Game of Thrones Jewellery. Read more HERE.
